El Grito 🇲🇽🎊🎉

Today is the marking of a historic monument—Mexican Independence Day. The historical event as I love my culture and people 🇲🇽.

In 1810, Catholic priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang the church bell and delivered the famous Grito de Dolores (“Cry of Dolores”), calling for an uprising against Spanish colonial rule. After nearly 300 years under Spanish rule, Father Hidalgo gave an impassioned speech in the town of Dolores, urging the people to take up arms and fight for independence, freedom, and social equality.

The main celebrations begin on the evening of September 15, when people gather to commemorate El Grito de Dolores and the beginning of Mexico’s War of Independence.

At 11:00 p.m. on September 15, the President of Mexico stands on the balcony of the National Palace in Mexico City, rings the historic bell associated with Hidalgo’s call for independence, and leads the Grito Mexicano, a patriotic proclamation honoring the heroes of the independence movement. The celebration traditionally ends with a resounding, “¡Viva México!”

The festivities continue throughout September 16, Mexico’s Independence Day, with vibrant parades, military displays, music, fireworks, and traditional food.

Learning about this history makes me even more proud of where I come from and the culture and people I represent.
