Small Steps
Little hinges open big doors.
The small things we do every day open the door to the big things in life. Mountains are made of individual rocks. Oceans are made of individual waves. Symphonies are made of individual notes, and conversations are made of individual words.
Progress is simply the ability to break big things down into small, manageable pieces—and then do them consistently. Day by day, those small pieces become the roadmap to accomplishing whatever you set out to achieve.
When we learn to recognize and take responsibility for the small things within our control, something quietly profound begins to happen: the world no longer feels quite so impossible. The distance between where we are and where we hope to be becomes less a matter of destiny, magic, or whether we are somehow deserving of the outcome, and more a matter of movement. Every great accomplishment, after all, is built from ordinary moments—a single decision, a single effort, a single step taken when the destination is still far beyond sight.
Anyone can take one step. Anyone can write one word. And perhaps that is the quiet secret behind so much of what we call extraordinary: it is rarely the extraordinary that carries us forward, but the willingness to keep doing the ordinary, one small act at a time. We do not have to reach the whole mountain today. We only have to take the next step—and trust that, given enough steps, even the most distant horizon can begin to feel like home.
